About Us

Rugby Creek Animal Rescue (RCAR) has been operated by the Smart family as a rescue for the past 8 years in Grayson Co, VA. The Smart family relocated from Burke Co, NC where they did animal rescue work for over 10 years! 

RCAR has applied and filed for our 501 (c) 3 Non-Profit status, we are awaiting final documents.  We hope that our new endeavor will bring the public support and finances needed to keep RCAR in operation so that we may continue our efforts to rescue animals in need!

Though the Smart family are the mainstay of the organization, the rescue efforts would not be complete without assistance from willing volunteers!  Dr. Patrice Covington in particular has assisted RCAR for over 5 years in offering veterinary assistance to our rescued animals.  Dr. Covington operates her own animal rescue out of her vet clinic in Raleigh, NC. 

Though numbers fluctuate frequently... RCAR currently houses approximately 25 horses, 10 dogs, 7 cats, 6 goats, 2 sheep, and some chickens.  While many are permanent residents, there are also animals available for adoption and numerous animals in
rehabilitation at any given time. 

As a Non-Profit Rescue we are reaching out to you to open your heart and pockets to help us help animals in need!  Even a donation of $4 can pay for a dose of dewormer!  We ask that as you browse through our website that you will feel connected to our animals and feel a calling to help assist us in our efforts.  Even regular food, basic veterinary care and farrier care can be very costly!  All donations, large or small, are greatly appreciated and considered very generous.   Remember your donations will tax-deductable!
